Meet Chelsea - 3 Year Old Coonhound / Shepherd Mix Chelsea was found as a stray in Tennessee in January of 2014. She was found to be Heartworm Positive which may have deterred potential adopters due to the cost of treatment. In July of 2014, our rescue visited the Tennessee shelter and met Chelsea. She stood out in the hearts of our volunteers and in October we brought her into our program in Illinois and treated her for Heartworm. When Chelsea left the shelter she was a typical rambunctious dog that had been cooped up for too long. She loved to run and play with the other dogs in her foster home and loved to have the freedom to run in a ... (Read More)fenced in yard. She would occasionally jump up for attention or 'mouth' you by putting your hand or arm in her mouth if she is not getting all the attention she would like, but we are working on this and she stops as soon as you say 'No'. She had almost fully corrected this before she had her Heartworm treatment, but since she had to be kept quiet with minimal activity, she started doing this for attention. This has diminished again now that she is allowed more exercise. Chelsea does not wag her tail to show she is happy. At one time in her life, she suffered an injury to her tail that makes her unable to wag. You can see happiness in her ears, eyes, and facial expressions, but she just cannot wag her tail. What she lacks in wagging, she makes up for in beauty! Chelsea quickly learned house manners. She willingly goes into her crate and sleeps at night, but also sleeps in bed with her foster occasionally and prefers that! With only a couple of corrections, she learned what toys were hers to play with and chew (she loves Nylabones!) and leaves everything else alone. She is crated during the day, but only because there are several other dogs in her foster home. When left out and alone for short periods, she has gone to lay in a bed or a chair to wait for her people to return. She is housebroken and will ring a bell hung on the door to let you know she needs to go out. She gets along great with other dogs and children, she has not been exposed to cats. Chelsea is an amazing dog that would make an excellent addition to a family that is willing to give her the love and attention she deserves. Standard adoption fee is $295 (cash or check) and includes spay/neuter at our participating vets, immunizations/shots up to the point of adoption, fecal, deworming, frontline, 1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, micro-chipping and 30 days of shelter care insurance. We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family to approve an adoption. Please email Kathy for an application at safehavendogs@yahoo.com. (Less)

Hendrix was at a high kill shelter with his mother and out of time. He seems to have had minimal people contact as he was very shy, submissive and had certainly never been walked on a leash before. He is a doll! Very sweet playful once he knows you won't hurt him loves the grandkids. He's good with other dogs. He now knows how to walk on a leash and is crate trained.
